Rivers, Rocks & Deep Time: A Geology Tour of Chatelherault Country Park with @ScottishGeologist

Join @ScottishGeologist for a fascinating geology tour through Chatelherault Country Park, where woodland trails, dramatic river gorges, and historic landscapes reveal over 400 million years of Earth history beneath your feet. Nestled in the Avon Gorge near Hamilton, this is one of the best places in the Central Belt to explore the connection between geology, landscape, and industry.

What to Expect

🪨 Carboniferous Rocks of the Clyde Basin

  • Walk through exposures of sandstones, mudstones, and coal-bearing layers formed around 320–340 million years ago.

  • Learn how this region was once a tropical environment, with rivers, deltas, and swampy forests that later formed Scotland’s coal seams.

  • Spot features like cross-bedding and layered sediments, recording ancient river flows and shifting environments.

⛏️ Coal, Industry & Landscape Change

  • Discover how geology shaped the industrial history of Hamilton, from coal mining to sandstone quarrying.

  • Hear how underground mining caused ground subsidence, even leading to the demolition of Hamilton Palace.

  • See remnants of quarries, mine workings, and railway routes that once transported coal through the valley.

🌊 The Avon Gorge – A Geological Cross Section

  • Walk along the Avon Water, which cuts through the landscape to expose layers of rock like a natural geological slice.

  • Observe how the river has carved a steep-sided gorge, revealing different rock types and structures along its course.

  • Learn how rivers exploit weaker sedimentary layers, shaping valleys over time.

🧊 Ice Age Influence on the Landscape

  • Explore how glaciers sculpted the Clyde Valley, leaving behind modified valleys, deposits, and river systems.

  • Understand how meltwater and glacial retreat influenced the formation of the Avon Gorge and surrounding terrain.

🏞️ Geology Shapes the Landscape

  • See how harder and softer rocks influence the shape of hills, slopes, and valleys across the park.

  • Compare the wooded gorge to the more open surrounding land and understand why the landscape varies so dramatically.

  • Enjoy views across the Central Belt, where volcanic plateaus and sedimentary basins define Scotland’s geology.

👣 Hands-On Field Experience

  • Identify different sedimentary rock types and interpret their depositional environments.

  • Sketch rock layers and discuss how geologists reconstruct ancient landscapes (don’t worry you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to - if it’s raining then we probably won’t do that.

  • Follow the story from ancient rivers → coal swamps → industrial mining → modern parkland.

Who Should Attend?

  • Ideal for beginners, families, students, and anyone curious about Scotland’s geology.

  • Perfect if you want a local, accessible tour with big geological stories.

  • Suitable for walkers — paths are well maintained but include some steep sections and steps.
